What debt collectors cannot do?

Debt collectors may not harass or abuse you. They are prohibited from threatening violence or harm against you, your reputation or property. They may not use obscene or foul language, advertise the fact that you owe a debt, or contact you with such frequency or at such unusual times so as to constitute harassment.

Debt collectors may not misrepresent the truth when collecting a debt, such as use a false company or creditor’s name, or give out untrue credit information about you.

Debtor collectors may not falsely imply that they are lawyers or government representatives, imply that you have committed a crime, or say you will be arrested if you do not pay, misrepresent the amount of your debt, say that they will take your property or wages, unless the debt collection agency or creditor intends to do so and such action is legal, for example, having a debtors judgment or order from the courts to garnish, seizure or sale, etc.
