What should I do if a debt collector calls me?

Your account has been handled by the debt collection agency from someone who valued your business. However, just as you depend on an income to pay rental, staff salaries, instalment payments, suppliers, electricity & water, taxes, etc., those who extend credit must have payment for their goods and services in order to pay their bills and stay in business, Instead of being asked to pay cash, you were given credit, and your account has been unpaid for quite some time.

You should stay calm and find a solution. Arguments and abusive exchange of language do not solve anything. If you are angry you may forgot important information. Many a times, it is the debtor who are abusive, not the debt collector !

If you are contacted by the debt collector:

o    get the name of the caller

o    find out the name of the company or person you owe money to

o    get the address and phone number of the caller

o    get the exact amount they claim you owe

o    write down the date and time of each call.
