Are phone calls considered harassment?

Yes. If a debt collector uses obscene or threatening language in communicating with you like calling you names, demeaning your occupation, or questioning the decisions that led to your account being placed with a debt collection agency. It is also considered harassment to call you at unusual hours (usually defined as before 8am and after 9pm), or call so often that it becomes harassing.

If you believe you do not owe the debt or not the correct amount, tell the debt collection agency, If you do owe it, tell the debt collection agency when they can expect your payment. If you cannot pay it, tell the debt collector why.

Remember that the debt collector can work with you to resolve the problem. Failure to contact the debt collection agency can imply that you are not co-operating and evading a debt. Whatever the reason for non-payment in the past, the matter cannot be resolved if you do not contact the office !
