Can debt collectors tell my neighbour or public about my debts?

No. A debt collector cannot disclose (or threaten to disclose) information about your personal or credit reputation to any person, other than you and your spouse. However, debt collectors can report accurate information to the credit bureau and pin information on your door.

A debt collector can also contact a third party, including your neighbour only to determine if you stay at the location listed on the account. If you have moved, debt collector can also ask for the new address and phone number.
