Can a debt collector refuses to provide any information about the debt other than the amount?

Debt collectors often do not get any background information on an account when it is given to them. Basically they are given a name, a phone number, the creditor, the amount owed, and the last date of service from the creditor. If you are in doubt, write to the debt collection agency and request verification of the debt.

In fact, while collecting past due accounts is a debt collector’s business, helping people to solve their financial problems is their commitment. Debt collectors are experienced in credit and collections and are able to help people who are willing to work with them. Many collectors receive letters of thanks from people they have helped.
