Why you must have a domain name?

If you are in business, it is important that you register a domain name for your company. A domain name is like a company's name and once it is registered with the registrar, it will remain and owned by you as long as you continue to pay the registration fee.

A domain name will give your company a unique identity in cyberspace. It is like a brand name, an address, a location in which the whole world will know and can access. Large companies on the Net all have their own domain names, because each of them has a corporate network that needs its own identity. That is why you see names like microsoft.com, cnn.com, yahoo.com, astro.com.my, maxis.com.my, etc.

Every domain name must be unique, so the number of available choices is diminishing every day. But once you have registered your domain name, it is yours forever, and nobody else can use it, unless you forgot to pay the registration fees or renewals. To get your own domain name, you must register it with the main registrars/ controllers.

Domain names are controlled by regional controllers. For example: .com names by InterNIC (Internet Information Center) , .com.my names by MyNIC, .com.sg by SgNIC, etc.

There are many registrars who register domain names for business entities. By looking at the domain name, you can know whether the registrant is a business entity, an organization, an educational institute, or an info-tech entity and also whether that entity is registered worldwide or with specific countries.
