Why you need an e-mail address?

An e-mail (electronic mail) is a means of exchanging typed messages between computer users in which messages are sent to specific addresses and stored in mailboxes. Anyone who is serious about doing business online has an e-mail address. It is the only communications medium you can use to reach anyone in the online world.

If you do not have your e-mail address, you cannot access to the Internet and send e-mail. Your e-mail address is established automatically when you get an online account. The address consist of your user name on the particular network you use to connect with cyberspace, followed by an "at" sign (@) and the domain name, which identifies the network. For example, alvinyau@pd.jaring.myflmea@pc.jaring.my, okau@tm.net.my, ccchiong@tm.net.my, etc.

When you sign up for an online account, you usually get to choose your own user name. Try to choose a name that is easy to spell and easy to remember. One simple typo in the address will make any mail coming to you undeliverable, so deciding on a long or difficult user name places an extra barrier between you and potential profits. In particular, stay away from names with numbers, underline characters, or special keyboard symbols in them.

The e-mail address is provided by your local ISP. An ISP is a company or organization that offers Internet access to customers for a fee. Sometimes, it is also called an IAP, or Internet access provider. At present, in Malaysia, there are six licensed ISPs. They include Jaring (owned by Mimos Bhd.), TMnet (owns by Telekom Malaysia Bhd.), MaxisNet (owned by Maxis Communications Bhd., Time dotCom Bhd., Technology Resources Industries Bhd. and DiGi Telecommunications Sdn. Bhd.

As of February 2000, JARING has 300,000 subscribers and is currently growing at more than 50% pa.
