What is the Internet?

The Internet is the largest computer system in the world. The Internet is often called the Net, the Information Superhighway or Cyberspace. The Internet consists of thousands of connected networks around the world.

It is a network of networks, linking computers to computers sharing the TCP/IP protocol. A network is a collection of computers that are connected to share information. Each runs software to provide or "serve" information and/or to access and view information.

The Internet is the transport vehicle for the information stored in files or documents on another computer. It can be compared to an international communications utility servicing computers. The Internet itself does not contain information. What it was found on is one of the computers linked to the Internet.

No one organization owns or controls the Internet. There is no government regulation and no one censors the information on the Internet.

The Internet has been the cause for many changes in the traditional marketplace. Companies have begun to realize the need to change their business models to remain competitive in the changing global marketplace.
