Sarawak timber exports up

Extracted from The Star Publication, 10th Sept 1999

Sawlogs and plywood, which fetched better prices, drove the rise in export earnings of the Sarawak timber industry in the first seven months of 1999. The average free-on-board price of sawlogs jumped by 18% to RM393 per cum from a year ago and pushed the export revenue to RM1.214bil, up Rm186mil

The increased earnings was also attributed to a marginal rise in export volume, which rose to 3.089 million from 3.079 million cum in the first seven months of 1998. The state earned RM1.496bil from plywood exports which was RM363mil or 32.1% higher, according to the latest figures released by the Statistics Department in Kuching yesterday.

Plywood is Sarawak’ third most important export commodity, after liquefied natural gas and crude petroleum.

Export of veneer sheets brought in RM256mil, up RM33.4mil or 15%. However, there was a sharp drop in the export revenue of sawn timber, which fell RM101mil to RM397mil.
