Timber council organising first marketing convention

Extracted from The Star Publication, 10th Sept 1999

The Malaysian Timber Council is organising the first Malaysian Timber Marketing Convention which is aimed at creating new markets for local timber and wood products. To date, 300 delegates have confirmed their participation in the three-day convention which begins on Sept 29. They include those from China, West Asia, Africa, Vietnam and Brazil. The convention is jointly organised by eight timber associations.

Primary Industries Minister Datuk Seri Dr Lim Keng Yaik said that local companies should expand their export markets and not just rely on traditional markets like Europe and Japan.

Dr Lim was speaking to reporters after opening the third Malaysian International Woodworking, Timber Processing and Furniture Manufacturing Supplies Exhibition and Conference in Seri Kembangan yesterday.

“We have a wide range of timber and wood-based products that can be marketed overseas and we cannot depend on traditional buyers as there are many new buyers,” he said. “All we need is to show them what we have to offer.”
