Ban on peninsular log exports stays

Extracted from The Star Publication, 1st Oct 1999

The ban on log exports from peninsular Malaysia will continue while Sarawak is expected to gradually decrease its log exports, Datuk Seri Dr Lim Keng Yaik said.

The primary industries minister said the move was in line with Malaysia’s efforts to encourage the wood-based downstream industry.

Lim also said there would still be the need to import logs, but this would be seen more as a short-term measure to cushion the structural adjustment process.

He said international sourcing of raw materials, will also be encouraged, while industry participants would be encouraged to relocate closer to areas where there are abundant resources.

Lim said this when he officiated the opening of the Malaysian Timber Marketing Convention in Kuala Lumpur yesterday. The convention which began on Wednesday will end today.

Lim also said that in order to continue encouraging downstream processing and value adding, existing incentives will be continually be reviewed to keep in touch with changing industry needs.

On the prospects of the wood-based industry, Lim said, with maximum automation and high technology, the industry will contribute significantly to Malaysia’s gross domestic product (GDP) and foreign exchange earnings even after full industrialisation in 2020.

Malaysia exported nearly RM14.2bil worth of timber and wood-based products in 1998 constituting about 5% of total export earnings, providing direct employment for about 245,000 persons which represent some 3% of the country’s labour force.
