Socso has delivered its promises

Extracted from The Star, 8th February 2000, by Mohamad Asri Ngosman, Public Relations Officer, Social Security Organisation (Socso)

The Social Security Organisation (Socso) has always delivered what it has promised and this is evident from the ability service award that Socso has received in recent years.

Socso has also provided a new call centre service to employees where all queries are answered by telephone. The numbers are 603-4505344, 4505346, 4505348 and 4505350.

Since 1992, Socso introduced a number of new systems, which have benefited a large number of employers and employees, which among others include:

  •   Re-printed contribution schedules were provided to all employers from July 1992;

  •   Expansion of employment injury to cover accidents during traveling in 1992;

  •   Relaxation of minimum qualifying contributions conditions under the invalidity pension scheme from 36 months to 24 months;

  •   The introduction of EDI and Diskette submission of contribution records in 1996;

  •   Enhancement of benefits in 1993 and 1999;

  •   The introduction of an education loan scheme in 1997;

  •   Introduction of a new automaton processing system in 1997;

  •   The minimum daily rate of pension was increased from RM8 to RM9 in 1998 and then to RM10 in 1999; and

  •   Provision of benefits to parents of school-going children in 1998 and 1999.

The new system, which is universally practised, was introduced after a task force consisting of employer and employee representatives had recommended it to ensure payment for temporary disablement benefit within three days.

Socso has also upgraded and acquired a new computer system to handle registration of employers and employees. No effort is being spared to ensure contribution records of employees are updated. This system will be fully operational by the middle of this year.

Social security benefits are wage-related and are also enhanced periodically based on the Consumer Price Index to ensure the value of the benefit is not eroded by inflation.

The education loan scheme has been well received by students and parents.

Socso works with universities and colleges to ensure children receive their money on time.

Parents and students are advised to submit their claims with the necessary supporting documents to ensure fast payments.

They should also check with their respective colleges or universities as Socso pays the fees and allowance through these institutions.

Socso, being a “caring organisation,” wants to assist in the worker home ownership programme for employees.
