Make Socso claims on-line by end of 2000

Socso claims can soon be made through the Internet, which will result in much speedier payments.

Socso director-general Datuk Wan Abdul Wahab Abdulah said this would be possible once its on-line registration and claims system was in place.

He said its Computer Data Warehousing network would have its main system in place by June 30, 2000 adding that the online services would be ready by the end of 2000.

Currently, Socso is operating an internal computerised processing system.

Wan Abdul Wahab said it would incorporate an advanced and reliable security feature as Socso had a huge database.

“Our main system now is secure because it is not open to outside links. But with the Internet link, security has to be real tight. We are currently testing the data warehousing system,” he told The Star.

He said with the organisation paying out more than Rm500mil annually, it could be disastrous if unauthorised people hacked into the system and messed around with its database.

“With the data warehousing system, accesses into the operating system will be barred and the internal system with be secured,” he said.

As a safety measure, he said external links would be through separate servers which are protected by double and triple firewalls as well as encryption software.

As at 1999, Socso had 210,000 beneficiaries with RM501.6mil in benefits paid out in 1999.
