What remedies do I have if my ex-employer gives me a bad reference?

Your former employer has a right to disclose a candid assessment of your job performance, but the information provided must be accurate and be backed up. Unless the reference is slanderous (false and ill-will) a mere bad reference is not actionable in court. And suing or threatening legal action can make it even worse.
