Port Klang aims to be among top 10 |
Extracted
from The Star, 25th March 2000
Port
Klang, currently ranked 14th among world container ports
– has a chance of making it to the top 10 list by the year’s end, said
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ling Liong Sik. “I
am a little bit ambitious. Seeing the good performance in the past, the hard
work put in by all concerned parties, and the growing numbers of main liners
wanting to call at our port, we can make it,” he said yesterday. Dr
Ling said this port had, over the years, jumped from 56th placing
in the world to 21st in 1998, and to 14th placing in
1999. If
this port was capable of scaling seven notches up between 1998 and 1999, Dr
Ling said the national port could be pushed further to be among the top ten
ports in the world in several months’ time. “Moreover,
we are continuing to see growth in our port. Throughout the first two months
of 2000, it rose 20% compared with the corresponding period in 1999,” he
said during a press conference, after witnessing the signing of a
co-operation agreement between China Shipping and West-port. Also
present were China’s ambassador Guan Deng Ming; China Shipping (Group)
president Captain Li Ke Lin; Klang Port Authority (KPA) chairman Senator
Datuk Michael Chen; and KPA general manager Datin O.C. Phang. Dr
Ling thanked China Shipping, a world-renowned main liner, for its decision
to call direct at West-port here. “Port
Klang’s evolution into a transshipment centre in the region and the
ambition to be among the top 10 ports are further enhanced with support from
main liners, such as China Shipping,” he said. With
the direct call at West-port, China Shipping is
able to offer Malaysian shippers services to most of the main destinations
in the Mediterranean in 15 to 20 days. Earlier,
Captain Li said in his speech that China Shipping chose Port Klang because
the national port was located on the main Asia-Europe international trading
route. He
added that Dr Ling had led a delegation to China last month and visited
China Shipping Group. That
was when both sides reached the agreement for China Shipping’s
Mediterranean service to call here. China
Shipping group is one of the main shipping companies in China. The company
operates 91 container ships of various sizes, with total slot capacity of
110,000TEUs. In
1999, China Shipping group inaugurated four long-haul container services,
namely the Far East-Europe, Far East-Mediterranean, China-Australia, and
Far-East-US West Coast. Captain
Li said China Shipping’s HSH Kusu, a 2,500TEU marine vessel, would call at
West-port from March 31 to provide fast, direct line-haul shipping service
for Malaysian customers to Mediterranean and Chinese ports. “Shippers can also utilise China Shipping’s feeder service network in South-East Asia and ship the South-East Asia cargo through Port Klang to the Far East and Europe,” he said. |
