All
quarries have to develop an environmental management plan to monitor
aspects of quarry operations that affect the environment. Results of the
monitoring programme have to be submitted monthly to the Department of
Environment (DOE). The plan has to include monitoring these elements, among others: Dust: ambient
dust monitoring must be carried out in nearby residential areas once in
three months to determine dust pollution levels and the effectiveness of
mitigating measures carried out at the quarry. Noise: intensity
of noise is related to the control and condition of equipment used.
Monitoring will have to be carried out to ascertain adequacy of mitigating
measures by placing monitoring stations around the plant and working
areas; monitoring should also be carried out in nearby residential areas. Vibration and noise: intensity
of vibration is related to the amount of explosives used. Periodic
vibration and air-blast (noise) measurements should be taken to check
blasting impact on the surroundings and to ensure safety limits are
adhered to. Water quality: Water quality of all nearby streams should be regularly monitored to detect any sign of pollution. All outlets from silt traps should also be monitored. The monitoring programme should be approved by the DOE. |
