Sites that sell
By Shannan Hearne

As a professional web site promoter, I'm in the business of driving traffic to web sites. For many people, there is a misconception that getting traffic to a site means getting sales. For many more people, the misconception has been smashed by the reality that a site that doesn't sell well, won't sell no matter how many hits it gets.

Someone said that nothing happens until someone sells something. Certainly, for each of us in our businesses personally, nothing much happens until we take that first order. But how do you get an order from your site?

Sites that sell have sizzle.
Think about an ad for your local steak house on television. Does the slab of beef on the grill or the sizzle of the grill itself sell you on that steak? You have to grab the surfer the minute they hit your site if you hope to keep them reading to the order form.

Sites that sell have value.
If you want people to return to your site often enough to have your sales message sink in, then you must provide some valuable content to cause them to bookmark your page and come back. Like in www.finmart.com.my, it provides tremendous content on business advisory. Some statistics say that it takes six times hearing a message before a sale is made. If that is the case, you have to get people to make five repeat visits. Include content in your site that will keep people coming back for more and more.

Sites that sell have character.
That doesn't mean Snoopy has to dance across the top of the screen. But it does mean that your site has to have a personality all its own. Think about it for a minute. Unless you are the only widget manufacturer in the known world there are other widget sites out there competing for your customers' expendable income. The site with the most personality or character will get the repeat visitors. Like in www.finmart.com.my, it is a biz advisory vortal strictly for corporate executives and biz people only. And that site will get the sales.

Sites that sell stand out.
A piece of that is being notable to the search engines so that you appear high enough in a search's rankings to be found by visitors. But a bigger piece, still, is standing out in the surfer's mind. Six weeks later, when a past visitor remembers a need for widgets you want your site to pop right back into his mind. If you provide sizzle, character, content, and value then you can count on being remembered. If you sell widgets in fifty colors show all fifty colors on your site. If you have the least expensive but highest quality widgets graph the reasons why on your site. If your widgets are different or unique in any way tell people.

Jerry McGuire made famous the phrase "show me the money". Show your visitors the money they can put to good use by buying your widgets and they will start showing you their money.
