Price of rubber gloves to go up due to higher production cost (24/03/00)

Extracted from the Star Publications, 24/03/00

The Malaysian Rubber Gloves Manufacturers Association (MARGMA) says that the price of latex gloves is set to rise following the increase cost of production in the last six month.

This price hike of more than 35% in the cost components was inevitable as manufacturers cannot absorb the increases in the prices of latex concentrate, fuel oil, packaging materials and shipping or freight charges.

The rubber glove industry experienced its lowest prices in the last decade recently because of oversupply, low rubber prices and favourable exchange rates between the US dollar and the Ringgit.

However, the sharp increase in the costs of raw materials and energy in the last six months has seen many companies losing money. Seven manufacturers had closed down as they were unable to improve selling prices, and more were expected to follow if customers refuse to pay a higher price.

There are about 90 rubber gloves manufacturers in Malaysia.
